Feis Crowned King of the Derby

Adams & Broomfield Counties, CO – As projected by odds-makers, the race for King of the Derby was a close one right out of the gate. Three area would-be jockeys vied for the highly coveted title during the first annual Night at the Races, presented by the Young Philanthropist Project of Adams and Broomfield Counties on Saturday, February 27th. As the dust settled on a tight contest, Bob Feis of Brighton emerged with the crown, securing the most donations for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Adams and Broomfield Counties.

Feis, a certified public accountant at Lemke Feis and Company, alongwith Brighton city councilman Chris Maslanik and Thornton business owner Paul Martinez, raised funds by agreeing to don jockey costumes for the event in return for money donations from the community. Feis was the early frontrunner, but both Maslanik and Martinez made up ground down the homestretch. In the end, Feis took top honors with a total of $605, followed closely by Martinez with $501 and Maslanik with $285. All three then honored their end of the bargain, entertaining guests at Night at the Races in their dashing jockey attire.

While Feis may have taken home the crown, the YPP and CASA of Adams and Broomfield Counties were the real winners. With the nearly $1,400 raised by the King of the Derby contest, the YPP made a total of $7,000 during the course of the evening. This money will be used by CASA of Adams and Broomfield Counties to recruit, train and supervise volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children.

The Young Philanthropist Project (YPP) is a group of philanthropists in their 20s, 30s and early 40s that work to reach out to the community in support of CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Adams and Broomfield Counties is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that trains, supports and supervises community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of innocent child victims of abuse and neglect. Each year, in Adams and Broomfield Counties, there are over 1,300 children who have been physically, sexually or emotionally abused or neglected, and who are in desperate need of a caring, committed CASA Volunteer to speak up for their best interests. In Adams and Broomfield Counties, there are over 200 CASA volunteers, and we are in need of more great community members to become advocates for children. CASA conducts volunteer training classes three times a year. For more information about CASA, call (303) 654-3378 or visit www.casa17th.org.
